Commitment to Sustainability
Esquinas Rainforest Lodge is part of a model project, which combines nature conservation, rainforest research and development aid. Opened in 1994, the lodge was financed by the government of Austria and is operated as the only non-profit eco-tourism project in Costa Rica. Esquinas Lodge has a strong commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The lodge has no air conditioners and instead uses large airy windows and fans to cool the rooms. All food waste is composted and bulk purchasing is used to reduce the amount of packaging used. They have installed a bio-degradable septic system and are looking into solar power. In addition the Lodge is committed to community development. They have worked with the women in the community to form a business that makes and sells shampoo. The lodge also hosts a children’s day where local community kids are invited to spend the day at the lodge to learn about the environment and enjoy the facilities. Lastly, the lodge has donated more than 7000 acres of forest to the Costa Rican government to be part of the Piedras Blancas National Park. |
