Commitment to Sustainability
Rafiki Safari Lodge was built to introduce tourism into the area as part of an overall wildlife refuge and tapir reintroduction program. A fence will be built around 200 acres of forest where the tapirs will be introduced and begin to breed. The tapirs will then be set free onto the more remote areas of the property and will have access to corridors allowing them to migrate south into other wildlife refuges and sanctuaries. Possible future wildlife reintroductions may include the giant anteater and the jaguar.
The tourism that enters the area will generate capital, which expands the local economy by employing the local people and purchasing locally produced products for the lodge. The lodge will also provide scholarships to local school children choosing careers in sustainable tourism, biology, veterinary sciences or related fields.
The staff at Rafiki Safari Lodge are very knowledgeable about the area and they do a great job of educating the visitors on the ecology of Rafiki and the programs and projects they have implemented including the unique micro-hydro renewable energy system that powers the lodge. Water is taken from a nearby stream high above the lodge and used to power the lodge. The water is then replaced back down stream for a minimal effect on the environment. |
