Description
Selva Bananito Lodge is a secluded rain forest lodge situated on the remote Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Because of the lodges abundance of natural beauty, exciting activities, and comfortable accommodations it was rated one of the ten best eco-lodges in 2003 by Outside magazine. Selva Bananito is set on a private reserve and organic farm that is run and supported by the lodge. It also shares borders with La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, Central America's largest protected wilderness expanse, which consists of national and international parks and preserves. This area remains one of the least explored territories in the region, its biological wealth only partially known. Staying at Selva Bananito Lodge gives the visitor a chance to learn about and experience native Costa Rican lands, wilderness and practices while enjoying the beautiful relaxing setting.
Activities
The lodge has a diverse range of adventurous and relaxing activities. The more challenging activities include tree climbing, jungle cliff rappelling, horseback riding and waterfall hikes. In addition those looking for relaxation can visit nearby beaches, take nature walks and go bird watching. Whatever your interest is, Selva Bananito will gladly organize a trip for you.
Accommodations
Selva Bananito lodging consists of seven deluxe cabins and four new supreme rooms. The open-air cabins are decorated simply with comfortable beds and have beautiful balconies overlooking the Reserve and the Bananito River. There is a main lodge centrally located among the cabins where there is a bar and restaurant and is a great meeting area for groups to relax and talk about their day.
Commitment to Sustainability
From the time the Stein family opened the doors to Selva Bananito in 1995, they have used the money generated from tourism to protect and maintain the 2000-acre private reserve. The lodge also offers a rainforest study program from high school, college students, and to independent travelers wanting to learn more about the area. Because they are located in a remote area of the rainforest, Selva Bananito does not have electricity but uses solar water heater to warm the water for showers and supply biodegradable soaps and shampoos in each room. The lodge also has a unique system of Cala lilies that occupy three separate ponds that filter the raw sewage of the lodge in lieu of a traditional septic system.
Location
The Lodge is located at the foot of Cerro Muchilla, or Muchilla Mountain, in the Province of Limón on the Atlantic side of Costa Rica about 45 minutes southwest of the city of Limon. Cerro Muchilla is part of an eastern outcropping of Costa Rica's southernmost mountain range, and houses La Amistad Biosphere Reserve. La Amistad International Park consists of several surrounding wildlife and Indian reserves (which also act as wildlife reserves), adding up to a total of about one million hectares (2.2 million acres) of uninterrupted, protected land. This "green belt," which spans southern Costa Rica from east to west, remains the least explored territory in the country, its biological wealth scarcely studied.
Selva Bananito is located next to the Area Conservacion La Amistad (La Amistad Biosphere Reserve) where it is situated in a very remote setting. The lodge
